The Company Christmas Party (Part 1 of 5)

Having your dad work for a television station has its privileges. One is that when you tell other kids your dad works for Channel Five, they all say, “Oh that’s neat!” Another is the kinds of parties the station throws for its employees and families.
On a Saturday morning we would dress in our best clothes, go to the TV studio, stand in a big line, and wait our turn to go on the set and see Santa. The show was video taped so we could watch it later. We were probably the only ones to watch it anyway.
As we got nearer to seeing Santa, we walked behind the set which was supposed to look like a house. As we passed by the windows of the house, the cameras picked us up slightly, giving the television viewer the impression that many more people were coming to visit Santa, which was indeed the case.
When we got up to see the old elf, the Master of Ceremonies introduced us to Santa and likewise to the TV audience, “Santa, this is Bill Loveless and his family, Mary Ann, his wife, and his children, Billy, Vera, and baby Karen. Bill is one of our engineers here at KSL.” After all the hoopla, I can’t remember whatever happened with our interviews with Santa. I just remember the waiting and what happened afterward. We went off the set and there were tables set up with Christmas presents on them. We got to choose what we wanted. And they weren’t just dippy little token presents. One year I got a little non-electric train set which I played with for about ten years.
