Of course we had Family Home Evening like the church asked us to have, but occasionally we needed to have a serious talk about something in particular. My parents’ approach to it, however, was far from serious.
“Ring! Ring! Ring! Ring!”
The bell echoed all through the house. I dropped whatever I was doing and headed for the front room where the meeting was to take place. My sisters gathered there also. The first time it was kind of surprising, but what we saw soon became familiar to us. Dad was sitting on the floor with a somber look on his face. His legs were crossed and arms were held out and were folded like an Indian in council.
He said gruffly, “Sit like me, kids.”
We all got down on the floor and sat like our dad. Mom came in the room carrying Christopher. He got down on the floor too and did his best to sit like the rest of us. Mom sat on a near by chair. As far as I know, we have never been able to find any ancestors of ours that were Indians, but we sure looked like a pack of Indians having a Pow Wow.
Dad called the meeting to order in his deep gruff voice. “Me, big
chief Watermelon. Start this pow wow.” Then he put his arms down and started in with what he needed to discuss. His gruff voice was gone. He said, “Kids, Mom has told me that we are buying a lot of toothpaste now. I think we are using too much.”
