After letting the bread rise in the pans, it was time to put it in the
oven, it was an exciting time since we knew that the bread was almost finished. Luckily our oven had a window so we could see the bread as it baked. It was fun to watch the light brown dough turn to dark golden brown bread.
Finally the long awaited moment arrived. Mom took the bread pans one by one from the oven with hot pads. The house already smelled good, but the steam rising off each loaf made it even stronger. We could hardly wait as Mom turned each loaf pan upside down and let the bread gently drop out on a towel on the counter to cool.
When the first loaf was cool enough to cut, Mom would slice off several pieces and put butter and honey on each one. I was amazed that we didn’t have to put them in the toaster, they were already warm.
After a few minutes, our stomachs were filled with several slices of warm and tasty whole wheat bread, and our hearts were filled with love for our mother who had let us in on the fun.
