In the midst of all the excitement, the next batch of scones burned black also. The door bell rang again. Dad was fumbling for his wallet, he couldn’t go to the store without it. “Trick or treat!” Things were getting panicky.
Mom prepared the bags of scones for the kids. Then Mom gave
them to my sister, Vera, to take to the door. Vera paused and took one look at the black scones rolled in granulated sugar. “Hey, these look like hairy toes!” she said.
Dad was just about out the door. He stopped. “Hairy toes you say?” He picked up the bags from Vera and opened the screen door. He handed each kid a bag and said, “Here are some hairy toes for you.”
The response was amazing.
“Wow!” said one boy.
“Real hairy toes?” said another.
“Boy, they look sick!”
“Gee, thanks Mr. Loveless!”
Dad never had to go to the store that evening to buy candy. The hairy toes were a real hit. They did so well that we served them for many years after that on Halloween.
