Halloween Hairy Toes (2 or 3)

The first few scones were trial runs, so they got eaten pretty quickly. It was hard to resist those hot and golden brown scones. After that, Mom made it clear that we were not to eat any more so we would have enough for the trick-or-treaters. But a funny thing happened. The oil got too hot and the next batch of scones burned. Mom took them out, but they were hopelessly burned. They were black! (Mom was busy with Halloween costumes and too many things were going on at once.)
Just then the door bell rang and we heard the first yell of the evening. “Trick or Treat!” came the voices of several children.
Mom started to panic. “Oh no! What do we give them?”
Dad jumped to get his coat. He was going to hurry and buy some candy at the store. Mom rolled the burned scones in sugar and placed a few in a bag. She said, “I hope this will satisfy the kids until we can get some candy.”
She went to the door. My little sister, Julie, had already answered it, and the kids were standing on the porch waiting for their treat. Mom dropped a bag of burnt scones in each child’s sack. They left quickly, not really knowing what they had. Those kids weren’t aware that history had just been made.
