Another duty of a safety was to act as crossing guard both before and after school. We had metal poles that were ten feet long and painted red and white. On the end was attached a red flag. We stood at the crosswalk and held out the poles to block traffic as the children passed across the Street. An adult crossing guard stood at busy intersections and crossings, but the roads around the school were quiet, so the school officials gave that task to us.
I was known as “ticket happy” because most kids thought I gave too many tickets. Okay, I admit that I did like to see other kids get in trouble, but I was also committed to maintaining justice and order in our school.
