Family Reunions (Part 1 of 4)

The Mormon Church encourages strong families. A prophet in the Old Testament says, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before that great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he shall turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to the fathers.” Mormons believe that part of that prophecy is fulfilled in studying about ones ancestors. Another part is the holding of family reunions.
Family reunions were usually held in the summer so we could have them at a park or in the mountains. It didn’t matter whose side of the family -- my mother’s or my father’s -- they were all pretty much the same.
When our family arrived in the station wagon, there was the usual excitement of being at a park with swings and playground. But Dad would make sure we signed-in before going off to play. Many times there was a big poster on a picnic table with a tree drawn on it. We needed to sign our names on our particular branch of the family tree. Then we were off to play until everyone was ready to eat.
